Walnut Creek will hold a tenant rights workshop on September 26, 2026.

The City of Walnut Creek will host a free virtual workshop on tenant rights on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, from 10 a.m. to noon, according to a city announcement.

The Zoom session will cover rent increases and AB 1482, California's Tenant Protection Act, which caps annual rent increases and establishes just-cause eviction requirements for many residential tenants statewide. The workshop is open to both tenants and property owners.

The city described the Sept. 26 event as the first in a planned series of workshops on tenant rights, though details on future sessions — including dates, topics or format — have not yet been announced.

What is AB 1482?

The California Tenant Protection Act, signed into law in 2019, limits annual rent increases to 5 percent plus the local rate of inflation, or 10 percent, whichever is lower, for covered properties. It also requires landlords to have a legally recognized reason — such as nonpayment of rent or a lease violation — before evicting a tenant who has occupied a unit for at least 12 months. Not all rental properties are covered; single-family homes owned by individuals (with certain disclosure requirements) and buildings constructed within the past 15 years are among the exemptions.

The workshop is expected to walk attendees through how these provisions apply locally. The city's announcement did not specify whether legal aid organizations or housing counselors would participate in the session.
