Commuters test the new solar-powered electric bike-share docks and transit arrival kiosk along Mitchell Drive in Walnut Creek’s Shadelands campus.

City of Walnut Creek Transportation Planning officials and the Shadelands Business Park Property Based Improvement District inaugurated a solar-powered commuter micromobility hub on Friday morning at the corner of Mitchell Drive and Oak Grove Road, expanding last-mile transit options across the 240-acre employment and healthcare campus. Built to complement the free County Connection Route 7 Shadelands shuttle from the Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre BART station, the plaza features sixteen inductive-charging electric bicycle docks, eight on-demand smart bike lockers, a commercial tire-inflation and repair stand, and a shaded cedar waiting pergola. All charging docks and e-paper departure signs operate off a self-contained rooftop solar canopy without requiring trenching into utility mains.

More than 9,500 healthcare workers, biotech staff, and families visit the Shadelands district each weekday to access John Muir Health specialty clinics, the Shadelands Art Center, the Ultimate Fieldhouse, and surrounding corporate offices. By placing pedal-assist electric bicycles at the Mitchell Drive transit transfer point and connecting directly to the newly striped Contra Costa Canal Regional Trail spur, planners aim to cut midday single-occupancy car trips between campus buildings and the Orchards shopping center by 18 percent.

Through a subsidy underwritten by the Shadelands PBID and 511 Contra Costa, employees and patients registering with a Clipper card receive their first thirty minutes free on every pedal-assist e-bike trip starting or ending within the Shadelands geofence. The smart bike lockers also accept standard Clipper cards, offering weatherproof storage for riders bringing personal electric bicycles or scooters on BART.

City traffic engineers will collect dock utilization and Contra Costa Canal Trail counter data over a six-month evaluation period before installing two satellite e-bike stations near Via Monte and Lennon Lane in spring 2027. Commuters can unlock pedal-assist bikes, check live Route 7 shuttle arrivals, or apply for employer Clipper incentives on the Shadelands Transportation Portal.
