Springfield Montessori marks 35 years, from 5 students to 4 acres

Springfield Montessori School in Walnut Creek marked its 35th anniversary on Thursday, August 20, with a festive celebration that highlighted the institution's significant growth and impact on the community. The ribbon cutting ceremony and meet and greet at the school’s Mitchell Drive campus were attended by Mayor Kevin Wilk and city manager staff, underscoring the school's importance to Walnut Creek.

The expansion of Springfield Montessori has been a cornerstone for families seeking an alternative to traditional education methods. The Montessori approach, which emphasizes child-led learning and exploration, has attracted a diverse community of learners. The school’s growth from its initial five students to a thriving four-acre campus has not only provided educational opportunities but also strengthened the community’s educational infrastructure. The opening of a second campus in Dublin in 2010 further expanded the school’s reach, offering programs for children from toddler age through kindergarten.

Founded by educator Shashi Lal in May 1990, Springfield Montessori initially operated in the former Burton Village, where Nob Hill Foods is now located. The school quickly grew, reaching an enrollment of 80 students in its second year. In 1995, the school moved to its current location at 2780 Mitchell Drive, a four-acre parcel in the Shadelands Business Park. The campus now features eight classrooms and extensive outdoor play areas, including a sport court, gardening area, and shaded sandboxes, all designed to foster a child’s natural curiosity and independence.

The celebration on August 20 included a ribbon cutting ceremony and free Kona Ice, highlighting the school’s commitment to community engagement. The campus itself offers a comprehensive educational environment, with programs that include toddler care, preschool, and kindergarten, as well as enrichment courses and a summer camp.
