California Highway Patrol investigators and Caltrans District 4 traffic engineers initiated a corridor safety assessment on Wednesday following an injury rollover collision that blocked multiple lanes of State Route 24 near the Pleasant Hill Road interchange for more than an hour. Emergency dispatchers deployed Contra Costa County Fire Protection District engine companies, heavy rescue squads, and ambulance units after a vehicle overturned across the high-speed transition lanes connecting Lafayette and Walnut Creek.

Firefighters established a protective lane buffer using angled apparatus blocking while paramedics treated injured occupants on the scene and coordinated hospital transport to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. California Highway Patrol officers diverted evening commuter traffic onto Mount Diablo Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard until heavy tow operators uprighted the damaged vehicle and swept shattered glass and automotive fluids from the travel lanes.

Transportation planners with the Contra Costa Transportation Authority noted that the Pleasant Hill Road interchange experiences complex weaving patterns as drivers enter from Deer Hill Road and prepare for the Interstate 680 junction three miles east. Caltrans maintenance supervisors confirmed plans to inspect reflective thermoplastic lane striping, overhead guide signage luminance, and evening ramp-metering intervals along the corridor this month.

California Highway Patrol officials reminded motorists commuting between Lamorinda and the Diablo Valley to reduce speeds during autumn dusk transitions when low sun glare across the East Bay hills reduces stopping sight distance. Witness accounts regarding the Pleasant Hill Road rollover collision may be directed to the CHP Contra Costa Area office in Martinez at (925) 646-4980.
