Park planners with the City of Walnut Creek Public Works Department and watershed stewards from the Friends of the Creeks dedicated a 180-foot cantilevered riparian overlook boardwalk, wildlife-safe amber pathway lighting, and a structural restoration of the landmark white Civic Park Gazebo on Sunday morning at Civic Park at 1375 Civic Drive (at North Broadway) in downtown Walnut Creek. Bisected by the natural tree-shaded channel of San Ramon Creek steps from the Walnut Creek Library, the 17-acre downtown park serves as the city's central green oasis for lunchtime walkers, community festivals, and outdoor concerts.

Along the western creek bank between the pedestrian suspension bridge and the Gazebo lawn, crews constructed a screw-pile-supported FSC-certified Cumaru hardwood boardwalk that cantilevers four feet over the top of the bank without disturbing mature valley oak roots or native streamside blackberries. Three recessed viewing bays with bronze interpretive plaques allow school classes and families to spot wood ducks, belted kingfishers, and native rainbow trout swimming in the shaded pools below.

Immediately east of the boardwalk, preservation carpenters replaced rotted cedar floorboards and ornamental spindle railings on the historic octagonal Civic Park Gazebo, added concealed steel ring-beam seismic ties, and wired a 20-amp clean power outlet for acoustic performers. Along the creekside trail, twenty-eight shielded 2,200-Kelvin amber LED bollards illuminate evening strolls without disrupting nocturnal creek amphibians.

The $310,000 Civic Park creekwalk and gazebo project was approved by the Walnut Creek City Council through the Capital Improvement Program. Residents can check gazebo reservation rules and park maps on the City of Walnut Creek Civic Park Portal.
