Environmental specialists with the City of Walnut Creek Sustainability Division, MCE community choice energy, and the Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) are hosting a late-October series of home electrification and winter weatherization clinics at the Civic Park Community Center at 1375 Civic Drive. Organized ahead of the winter heating season and the upcoming regional zero-NOx appliance transition rules from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the workshops give Walnut Creek homeowners practical guidance on replacing aging gas furnaces and water heaters before an emergency breakdown occurs. Planning ahead allows households to compare contractor bids without rush-installation fees.

During the hands-on sessions at Civic Park, certified BayREN Home+ energy advisors and building-performance contractors demonstrate how modern 120-volt plug-in heat-pump water heaters and cold-climate ducted heat pumps operate quietly without requiring costly 200-amp electrical panel replacements in many 1960s and 1970s Walnut Creek ranch homes. Attendees can also test portable induction cooktops borrowed through the Contra Costa County Library's "Induction Lending Program" at the Walnut Creek and Ygnacio Valley branches.

City climate analysts noted to the Walnut Creek City Council that residential natural gas combustion accounts for roughly a third of community-wide stationary greenhouse gas emissions across Rossmoor, Saranap, Northgate, and downtown neighborhoods. By stacking municipal streamlined permitting with BayREN, MCE, and TECH Clean California incentives, qualifying single-family and townhome owners can offset $1,500 to $4,500 or more on heat-pump installation, attic insulation, and duct sealing.

Walnut Creek residents can schedule a complimentary phone consultation with a neutral BayREN energy advisor at (866) 878-6008 or browse local rebate checklists online at walnutcreekca.gov. Additional evening webinars are scheduled throughout November for homeowners associations and property managers.
