Children's Fairyland in Oakland is presenting an Indigenous puppet production, "Hummingbird Saves Fire," in partnership with the Sogorea Te' Land Trust, an urban Indigenous women-led organization based in the East Bay, The Daily Californian reported.
Running through Nov. 29, the show is inspired by a traditional story from the Lisjan Nation, the Indigenous people whose ancestral territory encompasses Oakland and neighboring East Bay communities. As part of the collaboration, the park's iconic hillside sign has been altered to read "Ohloneland."
Handcrafted Puppets and All-Indigenous Voice Cast
The production's puppets were handcrafted by puppet theater manager Maria Rodriguez and Fairyland Puppet Master Randal Metz, incorporating traditional clothing details and beaded jewelry created by Indigenous artisans.
A prerecorded all-Indigenous voiceover cast brings the story's animal characters to life, led by child actor Annabel Cordero as Hummingbird, who rallies the animals during a moment of crisis with the refrain, "I may be small, but I can do big things!"
