The Berkeley Symphony inaugurated its 2026-2027 symphonic season on Tuesday evening at Oakland's historic Scottish Rite Center, led by world-renowned conductor and longtime artistic partner Kent Nagano. The season-opening program celebrated the ensemble's reputation for adventurous programming, featuring the world premiere of Argentine composer Alex Nante's evocative new orchestral work alongside masterworks by Maurice Ravel and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Nante's newly commissioned work, titled "Luz de la Memoria," captivated the capacity East Bay audience with its shimmering percussion colors, delicate woodwind counterpoint, and rich string textures that explored themes of human memory and spiritual resilience. Maestro Nagano, who led the orchestra through decades of landmark premieres before directing major European opera houses in Hamburg and Montreal, drew expressive, finely nuanced playing from the musicians. Concert attendees noted that the acoustically warm auditorium on the shores of Lake Merritt provided an intimate, resonant setting for the contemporary score.

The evening's second half shifted to classical exuberance with Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, marked by dynamic rhythmic propulsion and thrilling brass fanfares that elicited an immediate standing ovation from patron circles. Symphony administrators highlighted that opening night also marked the expansion of the orchestra's Music in the Schools educational outreach program, which provides complimentary instrument instruction and student concert tickets to elementary schools throughout the East Bay. The ensemble welcomed more than one hundred public school music scholars and their families as special guests for the gala performance.

Regional cultural leaders and classical music critics lauded the symphony for maintaining its steadfast commitment to living composers while presenting standard repertoire with fresh interpretive vitality. The orchestra announced that audio recordings of the Nante world premiere will be broadcast regionally on public radio station KDFC later this month, expanding access to music lovers across Northern California. The symphony's ongoing season will feature additional collaborative programs highlighting emerging California composers and celebrated international guest soloists.

Classical music enthusiasts can purchase subscription packages, reserve single concert tickets, and preview upcoming guest artist biographies by visiting the Berkeley Symphony portal at berkeleysymphony.org or calling the box office directly at (510) 841-2800. The orchestra's chamber series continues next month with an intimate program of contemporary French woodwind trios at the Freight & Salvage in downtown Berkeley.
