According to Claycord: About 70 unionized workers at Hospice East Bay in Pleasant Hill began a weeklong strike on Monday. The workers are represented by the National Union of Healthcare Workers.

Chapters Health System, which took over Hospice East Bay in October 2025, plans to eliminate 21 full-time positions effective Oct. 16. The union says these cuts could reduce the hospice to just two bereavement counselors serving approximately 1,200 patients and family members.

Workers accuse Chapters of delaying contract negotiations, withholding merit raises, and committing unfair labor practices. The employees unionized in 2023 but have yet to secure their first contract.

Hospice East Bay says it will remain open during the seven-day strike using a contingency team.
